If your website retrieves a lot of data from database then it would become slow due to inefficient coding, even if it is doing a lot of calculations then it may load slow, try to reduce the number of database fetches and calculations if possible. Otherwise size of images and other files, like external fonts and else may be the reason, if there are lot of big images then try to compress them. You will have to trade off between image quality and page load speed in such case. Sometime servers are also responsible, talk to your host in that case.
