A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. This allows search engines to crawl the site more intelligently.

sitemap.xml are for search engine crawlers to know that which webpage the search engines should crawl and which are restricted.

sitemap.xml is a kind of indexing that lists all the url's in a one file. It is helpful for search engines to go through all your web pages.

Sitemap is simple a collection of all webpages of a project for eg. if you have a website of ecommerce then the sitemap may be collection of webpages like index,services,products,contacts us,careers etc.

Sitemap is simple a collection of all webpages of a particular project or website.you can see a sitemap of website by typing "http://websitename/sitemap.xml" and enter you see the complete sitemap of a website.A sitemap can be generate automatically.
