The difference between SEO and SEM is simply that Search Engine Optimization is part of Search engine marketing or Search marketing as it is widely known. Both processes aim in increasing visibility in search engines. SEO is about optimizing the web property to get better rankings in the search results while SEM goes beyond SEO. It involves other methods as well which can get you more search engine visitors like PPC advertising.

The Objectives of SEO and SEM are:
Search Engine Optimization(SEO) is a technique used to generate the traffic into the website and helps in the increase of the pagerank in the Search Engine Result Pages(SERP).SEO helps to generate the Organic traffic into the Website.

Search Engine Marketing(SEM) is a combination of SEO and Pay Per Click Advertising results in the better ranking in the Search Results.

It is use to improve the visibility of your website on the search results.
It improves the traffic for the website.

SEM- It is use for paid services to get the direct traffic for the website.
This will mostly use for getting the instant results.
