To check back links use ahrefs.com and openlinkprofiler.com
To check search queries, traffic, social signals and conversions use Google Analytics. Hope this helps.

There is only one way by checking backlinks of competitors and go through and you will know what's the techniques they have used. Tools for back link check already listed above by others.
