You can track your website traffic using Google Analytics. It's the most popular way. Maximum numbers of webmasters use this tool to track their website traffic.
I can suggest another tool to you if you use WordPress CMS. You can use JetPack WordPress plugin. This plugin will not only help you to get your site's stats but also help you for other misc. things.

Traffic of any website can be traced easily by using the Google webmaster tool. Even Alexa and SEMrush are also helpful to check the traffic and ranking of any website easily.

If you use php mysql then you may write simple script that will update the table when ever page is loaded. This is the most appropriate method to trace traffic.

It is very important for a business owner to keep their eye on tracking the traffic coming in their website.
I would like to suggest you to use the Google Analytics which is the great website for tracking the traffic of your website.
It provides an excellent record of tracking the traffic and let you create the best strategies for driving the traffic.
