A tracking URL is a special URL or Uniform Resource Locator that is used to track certain elements when a link is clicked on. Tracking URLs are most frequently used in paid advertising, to learn where clicks on links are coming from, conversion rates from visitors to customers, and other aspects of pay per click advertising that can be adjusted to draw and cultivate the desired results of a paid inclusion campaign.

Tracking URLs are incredibly useful devices that allow you to determine the effectiveness of your marketing campaigns. You should use tracking URLs when you're directing traffic to a landing page from somewhere other than a call-to-action on your own site, like an email blast, PPC campaign, banner ad, and so forth

So tracking URL refers to the URL with a tracking code. One such tracking code is UTM (Urchin Traffic Monitor) used by Google Analytics. The use of this code is to provide information about website visitors, sources etc to the website owner. Generally such tracking codes start with a '?' which effectively makes no change in the destination but adds some parameter to the URL which when triggered sends info to the tracking tool being used. When you manage pay-per-click campaigns in conjunction with other online marketing efforts, it is extremely important to keep your data neatly separated. In the case of Google Analytics, if you don’t take care to tag your destination URLs, the data you receive will be meaningless at best.
