A URL shortener is a way to make a long URL shorter. It is a tool which is mostly used for social media sites to make long URL shorter.

A URL shortener is an online application that converts a regular URL into its condensed format.

The user only has to copy the full URL of a website and paste it into the URL shortening tool to come up with an abbreviated version that is around 10 to 20 characters long.....

some site like twitter have 140 character length which makes it difficult with website's having long Urls. so people use "bitly", "Google URL Shortener" to shorten the url
