You can use Google keyword planner tool to select keyword for your website. It depends on the type of service or product you are providing.

If I were you I would write down the natural keywords for the blog or website I am building. Then I would go to Google Adwords keyword tool and check how many people are typing those keywords in the search engines.

Then, I would look at the possibility of being able to rank on some of those keywords. For example, it is hard to rank for Hotels in New York but it may be relatively easy to rank for hotels in a small town.

The next thing you need to look at is that if the keyword you choose is a money keyword. For example, it is almost impossible to rank for "Travel" and even if you rank you don't get paid much. Money keywords are like "New Delhi Hotels". If someone is searching for this keyword, the person is probably looking to book a hotel.

Depending on how quickly you want money and how much you choose strong money keyword or a long tail keyword. A strong money keyword would be Hotels in New York. It is hard to rank but if you could you would make good money. A long tail keyword is Bed and Breakfast accommodation in Brooklyn.

By the way, you cannot choose one keyword and keep hammering it each time you try to get a link. You have to choose many keywords and use them in variation. Also, you have to use your URL and your website name as your keyword. In general you shouldn't use one keyword more than 3 - 4%. This could lead to penalties. Good luck.

You need to think specific. "new York restaurants" is going to be saturated. Something like "Restaurants in the Bronx" is already drastically more specific and localized.

Keywords are selected based on :
1. Focus on Good Phrases
2. Avoiding "Vanity" Keywords
3. Using Google's Wonder Wheel
4. The Value of Repetition
5. Guiding Your Content Strategy
