I see SEM as a rather broad term. It's everything that can be done to utilize the technology of search engines with the goal of promoting a web site and increasing its traffic, its "stickiness," and, in the case of sites that promote a business (or are a business), increase profits. SEO, therefore, would be a subset of SEM.
No SEM campaign is complete without SEO. Moreover, since the purpose of SEO is to make the site better for both search engines and users, you may find that it will suffice on its own. In any case, the advantages of SEO over the other aspects of SEM make it clear that, even if you are going to spend additional money on advertising and paid placement, SEO must be your first step in promoting your site.

I agree with Joseph cause SEM only provide advertisement & help in increasing just traffic. But SEO help in improving ranking of the website.

SMO refers to the process of exposing your website on social media channels (social networking websites, blogs, video distribution channels etc) so that it’s awareness and content are easily spread through social mediums and online communities by users and visitors of the website.
This can include anything done “on-page” such as improving the design and usability of the website. For example, widgets like “digg this”.

SMM on the other hand plays more of an active role which makes use of social media outlets to promote a product. Most importantly it helps you in product promotion and interaction with customers.
This can be anything from creating compelling content that gets bookmarked and even hits digg’s homepage to spreading a viral video by putting it on YouTube. It’s about the things that are done “off-site”, For example, participating in online communities where your customers hang out would be an active role that falls under SMM.

SEM holds the benefit in the fact that you can get instant qualified traffic to your web page. How much traffic is only dependent on your budget. So what are the cons of SEM? Firstly, if you do not properly optimize your ads, as in Google's case, you run the risk of burning through your marketing budget very fast and having a low conversion rate to show for it.
SEO on the other hand is a longer term approach, and utilizes many best practice web design standards. Good original content, well implemented on page optimization and a solid link building campaign is usually more than sufficient for SEO. Apart from achieving good rankings, you are also developing a solid site that your visitors like to visit and stay on.

seo is where you rank keyword in a organic way and you need not pay to the search engine. where as in sem you need to pay to the search engine for every click.
