Crawling means sucking content without processing the results. Crawlers are rather dumb processes that fetch content supplied by Web servers answering (HTTP) requests of requested URLs, delivering those contents to other processes, e.g. crawling caches or directly to indexers.

Indexing means making sense out of the retrieved contents, storing the processing results in a (more or less complex) document index. Link analysis is a way to measure URI importance, popularity, trustworthiness and so on.

One perfect example of terms that are incorrectly used synonymously is Crawling and Indexing. Whether the writer understands the difference or not, in many SEO articles it leads the reader to believe the two words mean the same thing. They most definitely do not.

Crawling: Is a process where the search engine bot scan a web page content and all internal and external back links.

Indexing: It's a process after crawling where search engine bot stores the page for relevant search term in google database.

Crawling is the process or reading through your webpage source by search engine spiders. They provide a cache certificate after a successful crawl. Indexing is updating the cached webpages in search engine database. Indexed webpages are now ready for search engine rankings.
