Canonical tag is the another option to deal with the duplicate content. The canonical tag passes the same amount of link juice as 301 redirect.

Another option for dealing with duplicate content is to utilize the rel=canonical tag. The rel=canonical tag passes the same amount of link juice (ranking power) as a 301 redirect, and often takes much less development time to implement. The tag is part of the HTML head of a web page.

canonicalization refers to individual web pages that can be loaded from multiple URLs. This is a problem because when multiple pages have the same content but different URLs, links that are intended to go to the same page get split up among multiple URLs. This means that the popularity of the pages gets split up. Unfortunately for web developers, this happens far too often because the default settings for web servers create this problem. utilize the rel=canonical tag. The rel=canonical tag passes the same amount of link juice (ranking power) as a 301 redirect, and often takes much less development time to implement.

The tag is part of the HTML head of a web page. This meta tag isn't new, but like nofollow, simply uses a new rel parameter. For example:

<link href="http://www.example.com/canonical-version-of-page/" rel="canonical" />

A rel canonical tag is a special tag that is inserted into the header of your HTML that helps communicate to search engine bots the relationship of that piece of content to others on your site. Canonical tags tell the search engine bots which pieces of content are the original or primary ones and which are duplicates. This way the bot will pass over the duplicates and only index and give link credit to the primary piece.

Canonical tag is used to resolve the issue of duplicate content. if you have same landing page for different url then it will create an issue of duplicate content. To resolve this issue we use canonical tag.

Canonical tag specifies the source URL of a given page to a search engine such as Google. Canonical tags are used to the declare for a single page as its own source or for duplicate pages to reference their source.

Canonical tags are used to declare a single page as its own source or for duplicate pages to reference their source / originating page. Search Engines use the canonical tag to combat duplicate content issues and assign the search engine ranking value for that content to the page designated as the “source” URL.
