A sitemap is a list of pages contained a website urls available for the user and search engines to navigate a site and find the content they are looking for.

There are only two types: XML and HTML
HTML sitemaps are displayed with the user in mind and with the same structure.
XML sitemaps do pretty much the same thing as a HTML but they are in a different type of web code and document. They are also a visible list but provide URLs to the web crawlers that give additional data about the pages metatags.

The sitemap.xml file in an XML file that is saved to a website’s server. It contains a list of all the subpages belonging to the website. These files help search engines to learn more about the structure of a website. This speeds up the crawl process and reduces the likelihood that the crawler will overlook subpages. In addition, the file can provide additional information about certain content, e.g.:

Information about images or videos that can be found on a website or the duration of a video and its subject.
General information about the website, e.g. when it was last updated

A solid sitemap should show a quick, easy-to-follow overview of your website, provide a pathway for search engines robots to follow and provide text links to every page of your website.

Sitemap is basically the map that contain information of all located resource on a website. It helps users, as well as search engines, to easily explore a website for their required object. On the other hand it also helps them to improve their search (for user) and indexing experience (for search engines).

Sitemap consists of list of website urls, that helps search engine to index the webpages easily and quickly.
Two types of Sitemaps are there:
1. XML sitemap - used for the search engines to index your all webpages in a site.
2. HTML sitemap - which is visible to user for navigation in a site.

Sitemap is tool for web design.that can improve the crawling of your site. Like google have it's own sitemap name's "google sitemap".
I think it has 2 types XML sitemap n HTML sitemap.
From my point of view XML sitemap is best.
