Hi,
you should work on articles, bookmarking and forum posting. If you have niche list of directories then you can do directory submissions too to get higher ranking.

Some directories can be helpful bust most of them aren't worth it nowadays. Be sure to check the pagerank before adding your site to a directory.

As per my experience, article submission, social bookmarking and forums posting are the best techniques for building backlinks as well as driving good amount of visitors.

Bookmarking is the best thing! But forum posting is a must. And also article is a must. Go in this order to get good results.
