I am not to experienced with reciprocal link exchanges but I've heard they can be useful for building backlinks so I want to know are they good for seo.

Reciprocal link exchanges can be good for your SEO, but Google has specifically warned against excessive use of such tactics only for SEO purposes, and will penalize you for doing so. To sum it up, if you do it in a natural way and avoid excessive use, you should be fine.

Reciprocal link exchange worked fine in the past. But now when google is being so strict, I would suggest to drop this activity. There are very high chances that google will count is as spam.

But organic niche to similar niche two way linking must still be ok? So if you had a sports website you find someone with a sports website as well and both link to each other that can't be bad. You guys are just talking about those big link exchanges that just get you thrown in some random's website?

Reciprocal links are two way linking in which first you give backlink then you get backlink. So use the following tips when you are doing reciprocal linking :
1. Make sure the site is relevant to your niche.
2. Good DA and PA of site.
3. Quality content on website.
4. Check does the site have any spam backlinks.
