SEO is not important for every business, SEO is must for internet marketing, you have a new business like online shopping, it must be depends on the Internet, you have a established business website which is more popular, you old customers will directly will come to your website with your domain name, without proper keywords and SEO you won't get new customers for your business.

it's more like outbound links losing its value a lot more now than the previous update. On-page SEO is much important i believe.

There's no harm in owning top search results. Be careful though, there's a lot out there claiming they're experts and does more harm than good results.
