What I've learned about helping my kid catch up in math

Quick disclosure: I'm the parent who built SnapLearner (linked throughout). Tips below are what's actually worked for my kids over the years — the tool is just one of the things I've built and tried.

How to help your kid catch up in math (without losing your mind)

It always plays out the same way. Your kid sits down with a worksheet, gets stuck on problem 3, and the next 20 minutes are tears, eye-rolls, or you trying to remember how long division actually works. By the time you've figured it out, they're done caring.

I've been in this loop with two kids for the past few years. Here's what I've learned about what actually moves the needle, what doesn't, and what to do when nothing seems to work.

Why kids stall in math (the three real reasons)

When a kid gets stuck on a math problem, it's almost always one of three things:
  1. A foundation gap two or three grades back. A 5th grader struggling with decimal multiplication usually isn't bad at decimals. They're shaky on times tables. A 4th grader who can't do long division usually doesn't know 7 × 8 fast enough to keep up. Every multi-step problem becomes a slog through arithmetic that should be automatic.
  2. A presentation gap. The textbook explains it one way. The teacher explained it differently. The video tutorial uses different notation. Kids don't know which version is "right" and freeze. Doesn't mean they can't do the math.
  3. Drill fatigue. The same 20 problems on a worksheet five days in a row. Once they've memorised the worksheet, they're not learning. They're just performing.

What actually works at home

1. Daily 15 minutes beats weekend cramming. Every research-backed math intervention I've read about hammers this point. Consistency over volume. A kid who does 15 minutes a day five days a week learns more than one who does 90 minutes once a weekend. If you want a quick map of what your kid is supposed to be learning in a given year, the Grade 3 and Grade 4 overviews are where most parents need to focus — those two years are where math actually starts to get real.

2. Drill the times tables specifically. If your kid is in grade 3-6 and isn't fluent with multiplication facts up to 12 × 12, fix this before anything else. It's the single biggest leverage point. There are tons of free drills online — we use a bracket-style tournament my kids actually want to play, which tracks best times across sessions. Even 60 seconds a day moves the needle. The multiplication explainer has the underlying methods (long multiplication, arrays, mental tricks).

3. Make fractions visual before abstract. Pizza slices, chocolate bars, measuring cups in the kitchen. A kid who has physically split a pizza into eighths understands what 3/8 means in a way no worksheet teaches. Once the visual is solid, the rules ("multiply tops, multiply bottoms") feel like shortcuts instead of magic. The fractions page has a pizza visualiser and the worked examples for adding, simplifying, and comparing.

4. Use real money and real clocks. Counting coins, calculating change, splitting a bill — kids notice money math because it's actually theirs. Same with telling time using a physical analog clock. Real objects build intuition that pixels don't.

5. Build the foundation skills early. Place value is the foundation every column-arithmetic skill rides on. Rounding and estimation skills double as sanity-checks. Area and perimeter tie multiplication back to geometry. These foundations get skipped or rushed in most curricula — and gaps here are what kill kids in the higher grades.

6. Don't fix the answer. Fix the thinking. When a kid gets a problem wrong, the worst thing you can do is just tell them the right answer. Ask "show me how you got that". The mistake is almost always one specific step — find it, fix that step, and the rest clicks. This one took me embarrassingly long to learn.

The trap I kept falling into

For the longest time my move was: kid struggles on a homework topic, I find a worksheet from somewhere online with similar problems, kid does it. Then the next time the same topic comes up, I have to find a new worksheet, and the new one is either too easy or too hard or covers slightly different material.

The honest bottom line

Most kids don't have a math problem. They have a fluency problem. They can DO the math, but slowly. And "slowly" is what makes it feel impossible by the time they hit the third question. The fix isn't more worksheets — it's daily short sessions on the specific weak spot, with enough variety that they don't just memorise one worksheet.

  • Grade 1 Math — adding within 20, place value to 100, halves and quarters
  • Grade 2 Math — column method with regrouping, money, time to 5 minutes
  • Grade 3 Math — multiplication, division, fractions for the first time
  • Grade 4 Math — long multiplication, long division, equivalent fractions
  • Grade 5 Math — decimal operations, fraction × fraction, volume
  • Grade 6 Math — ratios, percentages, negative numbers, pre-algebra
