The others have touched on several methods used to build backlinks. I just have couple things to add.

Since the Google algorithm updates earlier this year, you do want to be careful on where you place backlinks. Only place backlinks on relevant websites that are similar to your own. Not only is this more beneficial to you, but it will also look natural to Google. Do not use any backlink automated software. Google is really cracking down on links that do not appear natural (mostly from automated software).

Your best bet is to build the links manually or hire a service to build the backlinks for you. There are several services out there, LinkFool and Linkvana are a couple.
