PageRank is an algorithm used by Google Search to rank websites in their search engine results. PR works by counting the number and quality of links to a page to determine a rough estimate of how important the website is.

It's an algorithm used by Google to evaluate the quality and popularity of the website. It used to be a very important determinant, currently more I appreciate the information provided by the services like ahrefs.pl or MajesticSEO.
Oh and another interesting thing is the last update PR took place in December 2013 and is not known another updated or whether he will be executed because google as I wrote above, slowly withdraws from the project.
