meta tag is the tag in the html which is used to provide description the site which is used in the seo term. these content in meta tag is used by the google to crawl the site

They existed before search engines, but today, they primarily used in terms of search engine optimization (SEO). Using them may help web crawlers more easily index your pages in search engines, but, not all web crawlers or robots pay attention to these tags anymore.
Basically they just describe your page with a description and some key words for search engines to find your page based on the users search.

Meta tags have to be placed in the so called HEAD part of the website.Meta Tags is properly used you will have much more control over what is displayed in search results.
