You should be able to get a new site ranked somewhere within a few days. But to get it onto the first page typically takes a few months to several months, depending on the keyword competition.

For site updates...
Google will respond very quickly, sometimes just a few hours or days to website changes. I recommend using the Fetch tool inside Google Search Console to get them to re-index the updated pages.

For new blog posts or pages...
Use the Google submit URL tool.

I've had new posts indexed within 25-seconds in some cases.
