Addiction is a really hard thing to understand for us "normies". The desire to get clean has to come from inside him. There is not much we as loved ones can do to get them clean. Insisting, threats, finances, control, drug tests, guilt trips...they don't work. The peace I found came when I accepted he had to fix it, I couldn't for him.

Drug tests are pretty useless, especially when it comes to opioids. My ex was tested by the rehab and passed while he was using. Addicts are extremely resourceful. They will find a way to use if that is what they want to do no matter the "restrictions" put on them. Top priority, every waking moment is put towards getting that fix, everything else is collateral damage.

Even if your money is going directly to his bills, that frees up his money to do with as he chooses, and yes that is enabling him. I firmly believe the first step in him realizing what his addiction has done is for him to face and solve the consequences of his use on his own. In-patient rehab, if he comes to you and asks for it, is the only thing I would suggest contributing any money towards.

I didn't want to accept any of that for almost 5 years. Led to a lot of heart break for me and escalation in my ex. Acceptance is hard. Even after going thru this with my ex, who was my whole adult life (over 16 years), I can't imagine how hard it would be to do with my son. You may never truly stop worrying, love doesn't go away, and it is hard to watch our loved ones trapped in addiction. What I hope for you is to find a level of peace in your heart knowing you have done what you can. And you have. It is in his hands.
