I would like to think that over time, if you keep the content of your website fresh and up to date that it would automatically rise to the top of the rankings but I dont believe it is as easy as that. Links links and more links are what you need and then the whole trust rank thing needs to be built up

Well-established sites have old domain names, so by reverse logic, an old domain should mean that the site is well established.

Old domain has several advantages 1) Trustworthiness of website 2) Known by search engines 3) Sometimes helps to achieve better search engine rank.

Old Domain does not guarantee rankings in Google. You need to have high quality backlinks from authorative sites and a high PR to get the worth of old domains.

Age is factor in SEO but if will be considered only in the well optimized sites..

There are many attributes that go into what shows up on the first page of the SERPS (Search Engine Results Pages) and one of those attributes is called Domain Age.

it is good for seo that your domain is old.Domain age is important as long as over the period of time it had some kind of content. If you had a domain but didn't have any website there, age will not make much difference. However if for example over the period of several years you had domain with some kind of content, the age will indicate that your site is reliable and it should help you score higher in SERPs.
